Born in 1977 in Nicosia, Cyprus, I hold an LL.B (Hons.) from the University of Sheffield (UK) and an LL.M in International, Commercial and European Law from the same university. I was called to the Cyprus Bar Association in 2001 after passing the relevant examination in 12 different areas of Cyprus law with honours in 2000. I am also a holder of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Lancaster (UK). My thesis is on EU cyber consumer law. I have been practising law since 2000 as an associate in a major Cypriot law firm until the end of 2005 when I set up C. MARKOU & CO LLC, a Cyprus law office of which I am the sole shareholder and supervisor. I mainly deal with European law, Intellectual property litigation and registrations, Corporate and Commercial Law, Family law, Administrations of Estate, Personal Injury, Consumer Protection and IT/E-Commerce law, though I have extensive knowledge of other areas of law enabling me to head a law office of 5 lawyers. I am advising on the legal aspects foreign technology (gaming and gambling) start-ups and act as the legal advisor of software companies and of the Association of Cyprus Betting Companies. I have have been the Cypriot Correspondent of the EU Consumer Law Compendium, a major EU-funded project reviewing 8 EU Directives in the area of European Consumer Law. I also took the initiative for and co-managed the establishment of the IT Law Special Interest Group of the Cyprus Computer Society, which has organized conferences and seminars aimed at educating lawyers, judges and other interested parties in the newly-emerged area of IT/computer law. Furthermore, I have been organizing and/or speaking at conferences including seminars and workshops on various legal topics. I teach law at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate level. I publish in international scientific legal journals and books mainly in the areas of EU consumer law and EU data protection & privacy law.
